5 DAYS WITH CULTURE, HISTORY, TASTINGS AND SPORTS
In the same areas of the stages of the Giro, a rich program to fully experience Bolzano and the Dolomites all around
Monday, 13 July 2026
Today we discover the city of Bolzano

On the first day, you can explore South Tyrol’s capital, BOLZANO: you will find yourself immersed in a unique cultural mix. Here, north and south, Mediterranean and Alpine meet, creating an irresistible and unique combination. Bolzano clearly reflects the meeting place and exchange between different cultures.
Experience the historic center with a guided tour of the city (see the calendar of guided tours offered by the Bolzano Tourist Board < HERE), lasting about an hour and a half. You can add to this a visit to the Mercantile Museum under the arcades of Bolzano, which offers an insight into the city’s mercantile origins with many valuable exhibits, the Hall of Honor, some fabric samples, and the beauty of an Italian palace set in the medieval architecture of the heart of the city center. To complete your historical overview of the city, you can make also a visit to the Ötzi Museum, which houses the ancient mummy and artifacts, precious testimonies to the life of a person of that time, and to Castel Roncolo, the illustrated manor house.

Visit the so-called New Town, with the MAV – Monumento alla Vittoria (Victory Monument), Piazza del Tribunale with its monumental architecture, and the small Museum of Semirural Life. Don’t miss the NoiTech, an industrial site that has been redeveloped with the restoration of the office building, which now houses a restaurant, the water tower, and large spaces, now a modern cradle of innovation and technology. Beyond the Resia Bridge, you can visit the Lager wall, a testament to the presence in Bolzano of the immense tragedy of the Holocaust.
Bolzano and modern art: don’t miss the Museion, a contemporary art museum, or the Antonio dalle Nogare Foundation, two treasure troves of contemporary art worthy of European capitals. In addition, there are several prestigious art galleries.

On the second day of the week, we recommend taking the train, which will quickly take you from Bolzano to Merano (about 30 km), a charming spa town in South Tyrol and the second largest city in the region. Merano is a historic spa town, nestled among botanical gardens and elegant promenades. For centuries, people have appreciated the pure air and mild climate, which have given Merano its fame. > https://www.merano-suedtirol.it/en/merano.html
Once you arrive, stroll through the narrow streets and historic arcades of Merano to the modern Piazza delle Terme. The historic center, the oldest part of the city, pulsates with a special energy: here you can stroll through the narrow streets, discover small shops, or enjoy an aperitif. It stretches from Lungo Passirio, with its flower beds, to important squares such as Piazza del Grano, Piazza Duomo, and the imposing Castello Principesco. Just behind the “Kurhaus”, one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in the Alps, you reach the arcades: a few steps and you arrive at one of their ends, near the Parish Church of St. Nicholas. Here begins Via dei Portici, 400 meters long, the longest in Tyrol with numerous shops.

After visiting Merano, take bus no. 1 (Trauttmansdorff) or no. 4 (Maia Alta), which depart from Merano city center (and the train station) every 20 minutes, to reach the beautiful Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle (and the Touriseum). The Gardens cover an area of 12 hectares, sloping down over a height difference of 100 meters, where the view opens up onto 80 spectacular botanical environments, the surrounding mountains, and the city of Merano. The paths lead you to discover four themed areas that are home to plants from all over the world, crossing sunny terraces and babbling brooks. An unforgettable adventure (allow at least a couple of hours), even better if you join a guided group. https://www.trauttmansdorff.it/en/
Return as on the outward journey, by train/car via Merano back to Bolzano.

Today, discover the Renon plateau. Take the cable car up to Soprabolzano village and then walk or take the little train to Collalbo.

In Bolzano, the landscape offers the perfect balance between residential areas and green spaces. The city has many trails for those who prefer to take a walk without straying too far from the center. At the same time, more demanding hikers can take one of the cable cars to reach the plateaus surrounding the capital. Take one of the cable cars that depart from the center to reach the surroundings of the South Tyrolean capital in just a few minutes and climb up to the RENON – RITTEN plateau. (https://www.ritten.com/) .
Bolzano is located 265 meters above sea level and lies in a basin surrounded by mountains. In just a few minutes, you can immerse yourself in the pure, crisp air, thanks to the cable cars that provide easy access to the sunny meadows and enchanting forests of the Renon Plateau. Between 1,000 and 1,200 meters above sea level, you can enjoy the fantastic spectacle of the Dolomites, crossing pastures and breathing in the delicate aromas typical of the woods.

The Renon cable car departs from Bolzano every 4 minutes. Once you arrive, the train journey between the small villages of Soprabolzano and Collalbo takes you through vast meadows and fields, offering views of farmsteads and beautiful glimpses of the Dolomites. It is truly an exciting experience. Instead of taking the train, you can also walk to Collalbo: just follow the traditional walk dedicated to Sigmund Freud (about an hour’s walk on flat ground).
At around midday, you can meet the cyclists of the Giro delle Dolomiti at the RITTEN ARENA in Collalbo (ice rink), where they will finish the stage with a time trial climb. Return as on the outward journey or return by bus from Collalbo to Bolzano > https://www.ritten.com/en/1302-mobility

Bicycle tour (or by bus) from Bolzano to lake Caldaro

If you don’t have a bike with you, you can rent one in Bolzano > https://www.suedtirol-rad.com/en/ For those who are reasonably fit, we recommend spending the day on your bike and riding from Bolzano to the beautiful Lake Caldaro (Kalterer See, in german language). This is a classic route for all Bolzano residents. It is an easy and scenic route along the OLTRADIGE CYCLE PATH (> HERE), which follows the old railway line through vineyards, orchards, and woods, passing through Appiano, touching Lake Caldaro, and offering an experience of nature and villages. It is also suitable for families with a slight slope and mostly on asphalt (approx. 20 km to the lake, one way). Return via the same route or via the location of Ora/Auer and along the Adige river to Bolzano.
Other bike tours > HERE
If you don’t want to cycle, you can reach Lake Caldaro by car or by bus nr 131 (free with the Guest Card!), which takes you from Bolzano (train station) to Caldaro. From there, bus no. 130 will take you to the lake in 5 minutes. Alternatively, there is a direct bus service (no. 136), which takes about 40 minutes from the center of Bolzano (railway station) to the lake. Once you arrive, there are many things you can do: for example, take a dip in the cool waters or relax in the sun on the shores of the lake. The beach is small, carved out of the marshland, sacrificing a few strips of orchards and vineyards. Or take a walk around the lake or visit one of the many wineries in the area. > QUI
Return as on the outward journey.
